15 Minute Biscuits

Originally published in Better Homes and Gardens “New Cookbook” (1981) as “Biscuits Supreme”. This is a quick and easy biscuit recipe, just be sure not to over mix the dough! You can also add in some shredded cheese to make them savoury biscuits if you like. Makes 8-10 biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 shortening or lard
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. Create a well in the centre of the mixture and pour in the milk.
  3. Add shortening or lard, cut together using your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Start to combine the wet and dry ingredients with a spoon and then use your hands when the dough begins to form. Pat together, only folding once or twice until all loose dough is combined.
  5. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  6. On a parchment lined baking sheet, pat dough into a 1 inch thick sheet. Use a medium cookie cutter or the rim of a glass to punch out circles. Depending on the size of the cutter you can make 8-10 biscuits. You can pat together any remaining dough scraps to make an ugly bonus biscuit.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until tops of biscuits are just slightly golden.
  8. Enjoy warm with butter and jam, or as a side!
